Presentation to City Parks and Recreation Department on May 22, 2014 went very well.  Approximately 10 adults and several children attended from the neighborhood.  The suggestion receiving the most "votes" by the attendees was "park ranger on duty" for security and safety. Other comments were regarding poor watering control and grass that was too wet/muddy, lack of flowers, separating basketball courts from children's play area, more and scattered seating and scattered picnic benches as well as nuisance of parked cars and lack of street cleaning due to parked cars. Play equipment was a big concern of the children in attendance. Buena Vista Beautifiers presented a Story Book with 5 themes. Transportation, Safety and Health, Play/Learning, Attractiveness, Signage and Green Park Design.  Photos of the Story Book will appear on the Facebook page very soon. facebook.com/buenavistasm

Seeking Solutions for a Small Urban Park! Can You Help?

Here is our park!  :

  • Homeless shelter shares one property line;
  • High density rental neighborhood primarily migrant farm workers;
  • High school directly across the street; abandoned vehicles were the largest volume of calls to police last 12 months;
  • Unsightly fencing and picnic areas;
  • Heavily used park particularly afternoons and week ends;
  • Soccer and basketball courts played by males very popular

Committee actively seeking innovative solutions for this 3 acres park.  Please comment!

First Post! Welcome to the Buena Vista Park Santa Maria Blog!

Welcome to the first post on Buena Vista Park Santa Maria's blog.  Buena Vista Beautifiers Committee was formed in November, 2013 as a result of several years of talking about the state of Santa Maria's historic and beloved 3 acre park in the heart of Santa Maria.  As the monthly meetings have continued, it became apparent that the project was relevant to so many issues that more and more committee members have been recruited.  The issues at hand are: homelessness, fitness, "green" practices, neighborhood empowerment and pride, convention/economic business attractiveness, safety, preschool education, literacy, family events in the park, public gardens, volunteerism, neighborhood resources, parking and transportation, collaborative abilities of various organizations with City staff, uplifting beauty and historic demarcation.

Today a very interesting blog was discovered: cityparks.com
