Buena Vista Park was established in the 1800’s as the first
park in Santa Maria and is a historical landmark. The Camp Fire Cabin, situated on the same 4
acre property is an object of Historical Merit.
BVP is located between West Morrison and West Park Ave on Pine St. The Good Samaritan
Shelter is adjacent and Santa Maria High School is across the street. The Santa Maria Inn is two blocks east. A densely populated neighborhood of
apartments and for the most part rental houses are located in the two blocks
west and north of the park.
A committee
of interested citizens who call themselves “Buena Vista Beautifiers” have been
meeting monthly since November, 2013 for the purpose of making recommendations
to the Parks Department regarding the renovation of the Park. The committee is
dedicated to gathering input from the Park users and neighbors as well as the
larger Santa Maria population in order to find the highest and best thinking
which would be practical for implementation.
There is some thought that due to the location and historical status of
the Park, that grant funding would be obtainable and ideas should not be
limited by monetary concerns on the first go around, but be open to grand ideas
which can be whittled down if needed.
